Hello everyone! The bad news: I didn't get into Anthrocon or Otakon for 2017, alas! (Though I'll be attending Anthrocon still.) The good news: I'm gonna be vending for a weekend or two this year at MDRF! :D No dates confirmed just yet, but I'm super excited!
(TL;DR: I'm changing my studio name to "A Thousand Rasps" within the next few days.)

Hello everyone! I apologize that I don't post a lot of journal entries here on deviantart. I'm not great about it and it's something I want to get better at. I do try to answer questions quickly and post art, however!

I'm writing this journal because I'm rebranding myself. "Screaming North Leatherwork" is being rolled up into a larger studio that encompasses everything I do. Because I do a lot of things.

:bulletblack: You probably know I draw, since those illustrations usually do make it into my gallery. I mostly do digital painting but I'm breaking back into traditional drawing and coloring with copic markers.
:bulletblack: ... but did you know I write? The first novel in my medieval fantasy trilogy, Heartseeker, will be done very soon. It's about a traumatized soldier who is given the chance to do something much greater with his life, and he must come to terms with the true cost of winning a war.
:bulletblack: ... or that I was a computer science major? I don't code professionally anymore but I do occasionally make little web tools (in varying stages of completion) like WordGen, SigilGen, and the Copic Checker. (Those last two are painfully rough. Sorry!) I would love to polish these up and add more utility. I want WordGen to have a tutorial mode and maybe the ability to save templates using cookies.
:bulletblack: I also recently got a 3D printer! I'm learning a little bit about 3D modeling but nothing complicated yet. I've been producing tools to use in my leatherwork, which is a service I soon want to offer to other leatherworkers. Things like design transfer plates, stamps to use in a press, stencils, etc. (Don't worry. My designs are still my own and the actual tooling is still my favorite part of the whole process, so that will never change.)

As you can see, I have a lot going on behind the scenes. For a while now I've wanted to change my name from "Screaming North Leatherwork" to encompass this, and I decided to come up with an entirely new name for several reasons. First, I can still use "Screaming North Leatherwork" to refer to strictly the leatherworking portion of my studio. Second, the name "Screaming North" has no meaning. I came up with it almost ten years ago (:faint:) and thought it sounded cool. It was kinda-sorta a reference to "the screaming/yelling horn" (Gjallarhorn) since I go by Heimdall, but not really. So I wanted something with a little more meaning.

I looked for sayings similar to "jack of all trades" or "renaissance man" since, well, I certainly am that. I also go by many names, so I also looked for variations on "a rose by any other name" and things like that. Then I discovered the Icelandic phrase Þúsundþjalasmiður, which means "a smith/craftsman of a thousand rasps."

Um. It's perfect.

(Well, maybe not "Þúsundþjalasmiður." That's not easy for the layperson to say or remember. ;))

But I do like "A Thousand Rasps." So that will be my new studio name, coming very soon. :) I will FINALLY be setting up my Patreon as well, and I'll try to have monthly goodies for ALL of my artistic endeavors, from leatherworking tutorials to WIPs of drawings to writing excerpts to surveys asking what I should code next. Higher tier patrons get discounts on commissions, too! So that will be coming within a week or so, I hope.

If you have any questions please ask. Thank you for following me on this crazy journey.

Well, they're always open, but I figure I'd make an announcement anyway. My stuff makes great holiday presents! And for the first time in a while I'm opening commissions for character art and Furcadia portraits/icons!

Colored bust sketches: $20
www.weasyl.com/submission/7962…
www.weasyl.com/submission/7926…
A bust picture of your character rendered in sketchy lines with blobby colors and loose shading. Background can be fully transparent, fully opaque, or a mix like the above pics. Anthros, humans, etc. all welcome.

Furcadia portraits/icons: $20

I haven't taken port commissions in years. My style has evolved a lot. These ports are painted at 5x size for maximum detail, then touched up at final size, which is either 95x95px or 100x100px--your choice. The price will probably raise eventually but I need some new examples, so right now they're discounted!

All physical items will have a shipping fee that isn't counted in the listed price. Yes, if you order now it'll arrive before the holidays! (Barring huge orders like armors, etc.)

Elder Futhark Rune Bracelets: $11
Order them here: www.etsy.com/listing/85691758/…

I've been eyeing Patreon more and more recently as a means of some stable income. I've been trying to think of what I could do as incentives, though! I can do either incentives relating to either leatherwork or digital art. I wish I had a stream setup for my leather, since folks would probably be interested in that... but alas, that's just not a thing yet! Does anyone here use it as either a patron or an artist? If you're a patron, what sorts of incentives pique your interest, or do you mostly just care about supporting the artist? If you're an artist, what sorta of incentives do you offer, and which seem popular?

Thanks in advance guys! 8)
Has anyone used LEDs in their costume or another craft? I’m helping my partner make a Finn cosplay from Child of Light.

i2.cdnds.net/13/37/618x270/gam… (on the right)

We have the hat and we need to add the light. I KNOW LED kits exist… I just want one LED wired to a battery that I can finagle into working. (Having an on/off switch would be good too.) But I dunno what to search for, because I’m not turning anything up. So if anyone has any ideas, let me know please?
I'm very bad at maintaining journals on art sites, it seems. Sorry! I post a lot more on my Facebook and tumblr

Let's see. I have three shows coming up: Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, which I'm very excited about, Northern VA Pagan Pride Day on September 27, and Shatterdome Con November 7-9. If you're in the MD or VA area, come check it out!

The first complete draft of the first Heartseeker novel, Lines of Loess and Ley, is done, and I've done internal editing on the first half or so. After that it goes to my beta readers for scrutiny, then it's off for real editing, and then... I dunno! I might do a crowdfunding campaign to raise some money for professional editing, e-book formatting, and cover art/chapter art. If you have any questions about the books you're welcome to ask. I'm also trying to settle on a final pen name. Generally I go by Heimdall Hammer-Hide, so I'm thinking H. H. Hide, or H. H. Hammer (sounds cooler).
Hi everyone. If you missed buying something you liked at AC, just holler--I still have some of my stock left over and I'll be posting it up soon. August is going to be a bit of a slow month, and September may not be much better. So if anyone's been eyeing up my commissions, now's the time to pounce. When August rolls around I MIGHT be doing a sale, but I don't know yet!

Anthrocon was a big success! I got some cool pictures of my new armor and I'll put them up at some point. I met some AMAZING people and had so much fun hanging out with them! :D
I just bought a license for SAI and I've been having some problems. Every time I change a brush's settings, they revert to the default when I close the program. This is SO frustrating and somehow the internet isn't helping me, and that makes me feel like I'm doing something really dumb. :( Or missing something obvious. When I create a new brush in the program, it also disappears when I close and reopen the software. Any ideas? :\

PS: This has nothing to do with introducing new nib types or textures... this is ONLY brush settings.
Hello everyone! Does anyone know of any good conventions in the fall? It would have to be in the MD/VA/PA area. Anime, furry, comic, and general sci-fi/fantasy cons are all good, as are faerie festivals or small renfests!
Hello lovely followers. It’s official: I’ll be vending at the Virginia Renaissance Faire! This event marks a lot of firsts: my first outdoor event in my new tent, my first multi-weekend event, and my first actual renfest! VARF is a smallish faire in Spotsylvania County in Virginia. If anyone’s in the area, you should definitely come check it out! I'll be bringing armor, bracelets, bottles, cuffs, and more!
I've been working my fingers to the nubs ever since I got back from my vacation to prep stock for Magfest, and I have a lot of great stuff! I came up with a new style of bag I'm calling journeyman satchels (I won't have any at the con though--they were a commission) that I am SO excited to make more of them! If anyone will be at Magfest, swing by my table. I don't know where it'll be yet, though. Just somewhere in the dealer room. X) I have a painted black banner hanging from the front of my table that says "Screaming North Leatherwork."

I wish I were staying at the hotel, though. I live close enough to just stay at home and save the money... but there's so much cool stuff going on! I hope to meet awesome friends and play cool games... especially my friend Ben's caveman P&P game, where the players can only communicate via grunting and gestures. (I helped brainstorm it. I have no idea how complete it is--it's probably super vague but that's what I want.)

Thor will be with me so I'll be able to spend some time wandering and having fun though, so that's something. One of us will be at my table from noon-ish to midnight-ish everyday, depending on how we feel.
Okay, so basically I woke up at 5 am to the sound of tinkling water. Is someone doing laundry? Did someone run the dishwasher? 4 years ago the same thing happened--it was the middle of the night and I faded in and out of sleep to the sound of lovely rain... until my father thundered down the stairs and I realized our hot water tank had failed and was emptying its bowels all over the floor. I have lived in fear of the same thing happening in MY house. But how could it?

Well, it totally fucking did! 50+ gallons of water dumped out in my bedroom and my fucking workroom! At its worst it was about an inch deep all across the basement--though thankfully MOST of my bedroom was spared. It did get the bed wet though. And my workroom was savaged... but overall it really could have been worse. No one's commissions were lost to the water gods, though a bunch of my rolls of leather have wet ends now, but that isn't the end of the world.

So today instead of working I gotta deal with plumbers, insurance people, and those guys that bring in the fans and stuff to dry out my basement. I can only hope that the insurance will cover most of this. :(
Hello guys! I just posted a bunch of new bracelets to Etsy, including Magic the Gathering ones and Avatar the Last Airbender ones, among others. I'll be uploading them to my gallery over time. Tonight and tomorrow you can use the CYBERMONDAY coupon code to get 15% off everything in my shop!

www.etsy.com/shop/ScreamingNor…

So, the leather raffle is over. A few notes of importance:

A) You guys rock. Seriously. You're all amazing!

B) I didn't expect this kind of turnout at all. I thought "eh, maybe it'll get up to $50." Well, the raffle capped at a glorious $280 for the lucky winner, and I couldn't be more excited about it. The notes you guys were leaving were so encouraging. I quit my aeronautics job to do leatherwork and when I see people getting so amped about my stuff, it's incredibly validating. Thank you all!

C) You can stop reblogging the raffle post now. ;)

Drum roll, please! And the winner is…

Today is the last day I'll be accepting entries to the leather giveaway! The winner will be pulled sometime tomorrow. My time zone is EST, so that means I'll be accepting entries for about 16 more hours. The prize is somewhere over $200 I think, which is just insanely humbling and amazing. You guys are awesome! But I'll wax poetic tomorrow when I draw the winner! X)
